Race Across the World viewers have been left shocked after witnessing a duo lose their passports yet again.
On the latest episode of the BBC reality series, the teams left Thailand behind as they made their way through to Malaysia as they continued the journey towards their final destination of Lombok.
However, Betty, 25, a social media and events manager for a gym, and 21-year-old sales consultant James, a brother and sister from Yorkshire suffered a nerve-wracking 24 hours after leaving their essential travel documents on a bus.
After taking a bus to the small fishing village of Bagan Sungai Burong, the pair ended up at a homestay and were settling in for the night when Betty realised she’d made a huge mistake.
‘Where’s my bum bag,’ she exclaimed before trying to remember the last place she had it before her brother pointed out the bag contained both of their passports.
Without them, they faced an abrupt end to the race as they were soon set to enter Indonesia.
The bus they were on had been due to return to the city of Ipoh, nearly two hours away.
‘I am gutted and heartbroken we’ve lost them,’ James said.
With the help of their hosts, the siblings waited it out as they were told everything was being done to get the bag back.
The next morning the driver called and asked them to make their way back to the bus station, where they were reunited with their belongings, enabling them to continue in the competition.
‘From now I will be enjoying every moment because you don’t actually know when it’s going to come to an end. And I give James permission to slap me round the face or something with my passport,’ Betty said.
Although they were clearly relieved, those watching at home were pulling their hair out.
‘But how do you not feel your passport a million times when you’re in a foreign country?? How? I check my passport every half an hour and it’s in an inner bag inside what am wearing,’ Robyn posted on X.
‘Getting second hand anxiety from this passport drama, I have the EXACT same stress dream every other night,’ Emily shared.
‘I would have my passport glued to me. Probably the most valuable thing you own. Not kept in a bum bag that you keep taking off,’ Phil added.
Meanwhile others gave them travel tips to avoid it happening a third time, advising them to keep the passports in items like a bra or their socks after many couldn’t believe the back luck as this wasn’t the first time the pair had also lost their travel documents.
While en route to Lombok, having started the challenge in Japan, James suffered every traveller’s worst nightmare when nearly losing their passports.
In the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, Betty and James had perched on the side of the road to look at the map and decide on the best route to the next checkpoint in Thailand, opting to go via Battambang.
After making their decision, they hopped into a tuk-tuk, only for James to realise he was missing his bumbag, which contained his passport and all of their Cambodian money.
They immediately asked the driver to stop so James could jump out and leg it down the street to see if his bag was still there.
By a huge stroke of luck, it had been concealed in the bushes, however their Cambodian money – totalling £26.04 – had been stolen.
Race Across the World continues next Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
